US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Greenland should be under US control rather than Danish. This comment came during a NATO summit in Turkey, sparking tensions between the two founding NATO members and across Europe.
Trump told reporters that controlling Greenland is crucial for the United States due to its strategic location amidst Chinese and Russian ships. He also mentioned that this issue has strained his relationship with NATO because Denmark does not contribute significantly to Greenland’s development but benefits from US aid against Russia.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed in June that monthly talks with Denmark and Greenland are ongoing.
