Iranian Proposal for Strait of Hormuz Reopened, US Blockade Lifted

A senior Iranian official announced on Saturday an Iranian proposal to reopen shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and lift the U.S. blockade of Iran, according to a statement released by the official.

The proposal comes four weeks after the United States and Israel suspended their bombing campaign against Iran, with no deal reached to end a war that has caused significant disruption to global energy supplies.

Under the proposal, the conflict would cease with a guarantee from both countries not to attack again. Iran would open the strait, and the U.S. would lift its blockade.

Future talks would then be held on curbing Iran’s nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions, with Iran demanding Washington recognize its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, even if it agrees to suspend enrichment activities.

The official said this framework moves negotiations over the more complex nuclear issue to a final stage, creating a more conducive atmosphere for an agreement.
