Trump’s Board of Peace Set to Meet in Washington, Discussing Gaza and Mandate

Next week, Donald Trump’s Board of Peace (BoP) convenes in Washington D.C., with Pakistan and other Muslim nations attending. The agenda includes examining the Gaza situation, but unless concrete proposals for ending Israeli violence in occupied territories and holding Israel accountable are presented, the meeting could be seen as little more than a photo op.

The West Bank crisis remains urgent, with new evidence surfacing of barbaric methods used by Israel during its conflict in Gaza last year. The United Nations’ rights chief has warned that such actions make a viable Palestinian state “impossible.” Meanwhile, several Muslim nations, including Pakistan, have condemned Israeli expansionist policies in the region.

An Al Jazeera investigation revealed that Israel employed horrific weapons during the conflict, using internationally banned thermal and thermobaric weapons, which reportedly killed nearly 3,000 Palestinians with no trace of their bodies. The international community views these actions as war crimes, yet Israel continues to operate without significant legal repercussions.

In light of such revelations, it is crucial that the Muslim bloc at the upcoming BoP meeting takes a strong stance against illegal land grabs in occupied territories and holds Israel accountable for its weapons use on Palestinian non-combatants. Nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed since last October’s ceasefire, highlighting the urgency of addressing these issues.

However, with Israel itself a member of the Board of Peace (BoP) and Mr. Trump beholden to powerful Zionist interests, it seems unlikely that meaningful action will be taken unless concrete steps are initiated. The BoP thus remains an ineffective body without tangible progress on these critical fronts.

The upcoming meeting must focus on immediate cessation of violence against Palestinians and a clear roadmap for a viable Palestinian state, rather than imagining fantastical solutions like the “Gaza Riviera.” With Israel’s continued presence at the table, genuine reform appears distant. Unless substantial action is taken to address these issues, the BoP will continue to be an unproductive entity.
