Two Cargo Ships Collide at Karachi Port, Damaging One Ship and Spilling Containers into Sea

Two cargo vessels collided within Karachi Port limits on Thursday evening. MV Popo, departing the port, crashed into MV NIWA, a ship maintaining undersea cables.

MV NIWA’s bow section sustained damage and at least one container from MV Popo fell into the sea. The Karachi Port Trust shifted MV NIWA to Berth No. 5 immediately following the incident.

MV Popo is currently in the outer anchorage area. The vessel responsible for the collision has been stopped within Pakistan’s maritime limits, with a meeting chaired by the Karachi Port Trust Chairman underway to review the situation.

No casualties were reported. An assessment of damages will be conducted before compensation is sought from the MV NIWA’s owners.
