LONDON (AP) — London police arrested six men on suspicion of aiding Iran by spying on a specific community following reports of increased activity from U.S. and Israeli forces against the Islamic Republic. In a statement released to reporters, Metropolitan Police Chief Helen Flanagan emphasized that this was not an offensive action but rather a defensive measure in support of regional defense.

The four individuals arrested — aged 22, 40, 52, and 55 — are believed to be one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian nationals. They were apprehended at several addresses in north London shortly after midnight on Friday. The arrests follow ongoing searches at these properties as well as surrounding areas.

The Metropolitan Police described the suspects’ alleged actions as assisting a foreign intelligence service, specifically by spying on locations and individuals within the Jewish community. This news comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and its enemies, including the United States and Israel, which have launched retaliatory strikes in response to Iranian offensive operations targeting U.S. bases and Israeli interests across the Middle East.

“We understand that this may cause concern among the public, particularly within the Jewish community,” Flanagan said. “However, we urge everyone to remain vigilant. If anyone has any concerns or sees anything suspicious, they should contact us immediately.”

The arrests also highlight a broader issue: Britain’s stance on Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has been linked to antisemitic violence worldwide by some critics. Critics argue that the government’s failure to proscribe this key Iranian entity sends an unacceptable message of acceptance for the regime and its ideology, even in the United Kingdom.

“This situation underscores the complexities of international relations,” Flanagan continued. “While Britain is not actively engaged in offensive operations against Iran, we are playing a crucial role in regional defense efforts, which necessitate vigilance and cooperation.”
