British Government Allocates $34 Million to Combat Anti-Semitism
The British government has allocated approximately $34 million to address what one cabinet member is calling an anti-Semitic emergency in the U.K. This decision follows the stabbing of two Jewish men in broad daylight in north London, an incident under investigation as terrorism.
State Security Minister Dan Jarvis announced the funding on Times Radio, emphasizing its use for additional police patrols and protection around synagogues, community centers, and schools. Legislation to implement these measures will be expedited over the coming weeks.
Home Secretary Minister Shabana Mahmood described the situation as an emergency, detailing that counterterrorism officers are investigating whether the stabbing has links to recent anti-Semitic attacks in Jewish areas of London, including Golders Green.
The suspect taken into custody is a 45-year-old man who arrived in the U.K. legally from Somalia at age seven and had previously been referred to the government’s counterextremism program “Prevent.” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley stated that the suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health issues.
The victim, Shloime Rand, was stabbed alongside his mother, who expressed horror over such attacks in her community. Rand is recovering but remains under treatment. Golders Green, a hub for the British Jewish community numbering around 300,000, has been targeted multiple times recently, including arson attacks on synagogues and suspicious items near the Israeli embassy.
Most incidents have been claimed by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, a group that claims responsibility for recent attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe. The government’s independent reviewer of terrorism and state threats legislation, Jonathan Hall, stated that these attacks represent the biggest national security emergency since 2017, with Brits fearing they cannot live safely.
In October 2025, a man drove into a group outside a synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur and fatally stabbed one person. The Community Security Trust recorded 3,700 anti-Semitic incidents across the U.K. in 2025, marking the second-highest total ever reported. Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis emphasized that visibly Jewish individuals are not safe and called for more action.”
