Russian Jets Intercept British Surveillance Aircraft

Two Russian jets repeatedly and dangerously intercepted a British surveillance aircraft over the Black Sea last month, according to a statement from the defense ministry on Wednesday. The incident was described as dangerous and unacceptable behavior by Russian pilots towards an unarmed aircraft operating in international airspace.

Defense Minister John Healey condemned these actions, stating that they create a serious risk of accidents and potential escalation. The interception involved a Royal Air Force (RAF) Rivet Joint aircraft last month, with one Russian Su-35 aircraft flying close enough to trigger emergency systems on the British plane, including disabling the autopilot system.

Another dangerous intercept saw a Russian Su-27 aircraft conduct six passes in front of the British aircraft. Healey emphasized that this incident would not deter the UK’s commitment to defend NATO, allies, and its interests from Russian aggression.

The interception comes amid strained relations between Russia and the U.K., primarily due to the ongoing Ukraine war and longstanding spying allegations. In April, the Royal Navy tracked and “seen off” three Russian submarines during a covert operation in Atlantic waters near vital undersea cables and pipelines.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was warned that any attempt to damage U.K. cables and pipelines would have serious consequences. The monitoring mission involved around 500 personnel and saw U.K. aircraft fly over 450 hours, with a navy frigate covering several thousand nautical miles.

The British government has consistently supported Ukraine since the February 2022 invasion by Moscow. Defense and foreign ministry officials formally complained about the air incident to the Russian embassy. The interception is the latest in a series of military incidents between Russia and the U.K., including previous interceptions, tracking, and monitoring activities.
