U.S. Conducts Strikes on Iranian Island Amid Ceasefire Tests

American military forces conducted strikes on an Iranian island near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for attempted drone and missile attacks by Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that it shot down three Iranian drones targeting civilian mariners, while Iran launched ballistic missiles at allies in the Persian Gulf region, all of which failed to hit their targets.

In response, CENTCOM carried out “self-defense strikes” on a ground control station on Iran’s Qeshm Island. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed its actions were in reaction to an earlier CENTCOM move disabling an oil tanker heading towards Iran and targeting the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, which was denied by CENTCOM.

Despite a ceasefire agreement on April 7, some clashes have continued, with Iran blocking ships from passing through the Strait of Hormuz without permission, disrupting crucial oil traffic. The U.S. has enforced a blockade on Iranian ports and disabled vessels accused of evading it. Negotiations for extending the ceasefire, lifting the blockade, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and discussing Iran’s nuclear program have not yet produced an agreement.

U.S. President Trump dismissed claims that talks between his administration and Iran have ceased, stating they are “false and erroneous.” He also wrote on Truth Social that conversations with Iran have been ongoing, including four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, one day ago, and today.
