Ukraine backs Pope’s Olympic truce plea in war with Russia

In a significant development for the Ukrainian conflict, Pope Leo invoked what he described as the ancient tradition of the Olympic truce and called on world leaders to take real steps towards de-escalation. The move has been met with support from Ukraine, which expressed its endorsement for this appeal.

On Sunday, during the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Pope Leo used his platform to remind all parties involved of their responsibilities under the truce tradition. He encouraged world leaders to use the Games as an opportunity to promote de-escalation and dialogue in pursuit of peace.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha supported this call for a ceasefire during the Winter Olympics. “We support this appeal,” he stated, emphasizing that Ukraine is interested in a peaceful resolution. He noted that Russia has not yet responded, suggesting that any future decision would confirm whether Moscow continues its war efforts or seeks to negotiate.

“We are committed to peace and if Russia again rejects us, it will reaffirm its position as the obstacle to lasting conflict,” Sybiha added. His statement underscored Ukraine’s stance in a conflict nearly four years in progress—a situation that has seen Russian forces occupy about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, including recent bombings on power grids.

The United States continues to work toward brokering a settlement and has organized rounds of talks between Ukraine and Russia. These efforts aim to pave the way for broader peace negotiations. Sybiha expressed optimism by stating, “Let’s stop fighting now, and it will certainly open up paths for further peace talks.”
