US and Mexico Clash Over Ryan Wedding’s Arrest Details in High-Stakes Criminal Case

Ryan Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder, has become embroiled in a significant criminal case after his arrest in Mexico and subsequent transfer to the United States. The move has sparked a diplomatic dispute between US and Mexican officials.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her country’s authorities took custody of Wedding and he surrendered before being handed over to US officials. She rejected suggestions that any American agents were involved in conducting an operation within Mexican territory. In contrast, FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the operational involvement and coordination by US authorities in bringing Wedding back to the United States.

Wedding’s defense team disputes this surrender narrative, arguing that law enforcement from the US played a direct role in his arrest. The disagreement has raised sensitive questions regarding sovereignty and the presence of foreign agents within Mexico—a topic Sheinbaum previously indicated her government would not accept.

Meanwhile, authorities in the United States have indicted Wedding for leading a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation, which allegedly linked him to violent acts including murder plots. They also claim that he was tied to the Sinaloa Cartel and had been an active fugitive residing in Mexico.

Wedding appeared before federal court in California earlier this week where he pleaded not guilty. A judge ordered him held without bail. His next hearing is scheduled for February 11, 2026, with his trial set to commence on March 24, 2026.
