US Sec State Marco Rubio Visits Yerevan
Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Yerevan on Tuesday during his return from India to discuss plans for a corridor connecting parts of Azerbaijan with Armenia.
The corridor, known as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), aims to run through Armenia and connect Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave with Armenian territory. This initiative has been in development under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Rubio signed an agreement with the Armenian foreign minister, Ararat Mirzoyan, marking a significant step towards realizing this project which could boost peace and prosperity in the region.
The framework for the TRIPP Development Company was laid out by the State Department in January, offering Armenia 74 percent stake to US companies. This move comes after Armenia’s shift from being closely aligned with Russia to showing interest in joining the European Union and aligning more closely with Western nations.
Rubio also signed agreements on renewing a strategic partnership and working together on critical minerals, highlighting Washington’s focus on economic cooperation without compromising Armenian sovereignty.
Mirzoyan expressed hope for ground-level implementation of these agreements, emphasizing their potential benefits for Armenia.
