US State Attorneys General Launch Probe into OpenAI

A coalition of US state attorneys general has initiated an investigation into AI technology firm, OpenAI. The subpoena was issued by New York’s attorney general seeking documents related to a wide range of activities and user impact, including advertising, user engagement and retention, handling of consumer data, and health information.

The probe also seeks details on activities involving minors and seniors, as well as insights into the company’s deep learning models and internal policies. This legal challenge follows OpenAI being sued by Florida for allegedly misrepresenting the safety of its ChatGPT platform.

OpenAI Responds to Concerns

An OpenAI spokesperson stated that AI is a powerful technology and they are committed to responsibly delivering its benefits. The company takes the concerns raised by state attorneys general seriously and intends to engage constructively with their offices.

The Florida Lawsuit: Allegations Against ChatGPT

The first US lawsuit against OpenAI was filed in Florida, alleging that the platform has harmed children by providing information to school shooters, offering guidance on self-harm, and potentially addicting young users.

A Canadian mother also sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in a US court, claiming her daughter took her own life after being encouraged by ChatGPT.

OpenAI Files for US IPO

OpenAI has confidentially filed for a US IPO, with a source indicating it could occur as early as September, valuing the company at up to $1 trillion.
