US Congress Calls for Probe Before Recognizing Pakistan’s New Government

A group comprising at least 31 members of the United States Congress has penned a letter to the Joe Biden administration, advocating for a halt in the recognition of Pakistan’s new government until a thorough investigation into the recent elections is conducted.

Addressed to President Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the letter underscores the necessity for a comprehensive, transparent, and credible inquiry into alleged election interference before extending recognition to the incoming government.

Expressing concerns over purported pre- and post-poll rigging in Pakistan’s recent parliamentary elections, the lawmakers emphasize the importance of scrutinizing the electoral process thoroughly.

Furthermore, the letter urges the US government to press Pakistani authorities for the release of political detainees and to gather pertinent information regarding their cases. Additionally, it calls for a clear message to be conveyed to Pakistani officials regarding the potential repercussions under US law for actions that violate human rights, undermine democracy, or perpetuate corruption.

Highlighting the imprisonment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan in two separate cases just prior to the elections, the letter underscores the need for vigilance in light of reported irregularities and discrepancies in the electoral process.

Citing findings from reputable organizations such as FAFEN and discrepancies between Forms-45 and 47, the letter stresses the credibility of claims regarding election rigging.

Led by Representatives Greg Casar and Susan Wild, the letter bears the signatures of various congressional members including Donald Beyer, Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, André Carson, Judy Chu, Yvette Clarke, and others. It emphasizes the imperative of ensuring democratic integrity in Pakistan and cautions against recognizing a government without a thorough investigation, which could potentially embolden anti-democratic tendencies.
