U.S. Navy destroyers USS Truxtun and USS Mason transiting Strait of Hormuz faced renewed attack on Thursday, according to American officials speaking anonymously. The assault by Iranian fast-attack boats was described as fiercer and more sustained than the previous barrage.

Over several hours, the warships mounted a layered defense, firing naval guns, CIWS, small-caliber gun teams, Apache helicopters with Hellfire missiles and .50-caliber machine guns. No casualties or damage to ships were reported during the confrontation.

On Monday, CBS News first reported that the destroyers entered the Persian Gulf after navigating an Iranian barrage, which included small boats, missiles and drones launched by Iran. Despite intense attacks, neither U.S. vessel was struck.
