US Congress Ends Immigration Funding Standoff

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a $70 billion bill to fund US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol through President Trump’s administration remainder, 214-212 vote.

Representative Kevin Kiley, an independent, joined Democrats in opposing the legislation.

Senate Passes Bill

The Republican-led Senate approved the same bill last week after a marathon session. Republicans used reconciliation process to bypass opposition from Senate Democrats.

Government Shutdown Over Immigration Reform

A 76-day partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security occurred earlier this year due to disagreements over immigration agents’ reforms. The shutdown ended in April, with Trump signing a bipartisan bill funding non-immigration-related DHS agencies until September 30.

Trump’s Funding Requests

Trump sought $1 billion for his White House ballroom and $1.8 billion for an “anti-weaponization” fund to compensate alleged mistreatment victims. These provisions were removed from the bill, along with restrictions on the anti-weaponization fund.
