US, Iran Engage in Gulf Firefight Amid Strained Ceasefire Talks

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on Tuesday that the US operation in the Strait of Hormuz is temporary and defensive, aimed at protecting commercial ships from Iran. The ceasefire with Iran remains intact, as stated by Hegseth.

A fragile truce in the Middle East was under strain after the US and Iran exchanged fire in the Gulf as they wrestled for control of the critical waterway. US President Donald Trump launched Project Freedom on Monday to regain control of the Strait of Hormuz from Iran following a conflict that began on February 28.

Hegseth emphasized that American forces won’t need to enter Iranian waters or airspace, and the operation is not intended to provoke further conflict.
