US Vice President JD Vance delivered a powerful address on Saturday during the celebration of the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence. The speech took place from the USS Kearsarge, as dozens of tall ships from over 20 countries sailed into New York Harbor.
Vance criticized those who focus on the nation’s “imperfections,” stating they speak about America’s “sins” with a lack of “grace and forgiveness.” He urged Americans to reject simplistic views of their fellow citizens and country.
The Vice President’s remarks echoed similar sentiments from US President Donald Trump, who had also harshly criticized those threatening the nation’s identity on Friday. The July Fourth celebrations come at a time of deep political division in America but are meant to be a moment of national unity and pride.
Despite the festive atmosphere, a heat wave across the eastern United States posed challenges for the weekend’s festivities, with New York City experiencing an apparent temperature of 105F (41C) mid-afternoon.
