US Warns Against Pakistan-Iran Gas Pipeline, Citing Sanction Risks

The United States issued a stern warning on Tuesday, expressing its opposition to the advancement of the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project while highlighting the potential risks of sanctions associated with conducting business with Tehran.

Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik’s recent statement indicated Islamabad’s intention to seek exemption from US sanctions concerning the gas pipeline project, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to the initiative.

The Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline, envisioned as a significant long-term collaboration between Tehran and Islamabad, has encountered persistent challenges such as delays and financial constraints over the years. Emphasizing their stance, a spokesperson from the US State Department cautioned against engaging with Iran in business endeavors, citing the likelihood of breaching existing sanctions.

The remarks echoed sentiments expressed by Donald Lu, the State Department’s principal official for South and Central Asia, during a recent testimony before a congressional panel.
