Formula One has been a significant departure for Max Verstappen since his team unveiled their latest era of cars. The four-time world champion, who is now driving for Red Bull, expressed his frustration over the intense demands placed on him by the new machinery in the first race of the season.
During the Australian Grand Prix, Verstappen’s day was marred with a crash during qualifying and a tough fight to secure a sixth place finish from an 20th starting position. The complexity of these new cars required battery management along with energy harvesting techniques, dividing their power supply equally between conventional and electrical sources. Features such as straight-line mode, active aerodynamics, overtaking buttons, and boost functions have made them feel more akin to video games than simulations.
Verstappen acknowledged the transition to these high-tech vehicles was not a seamless one, leading him to swap his simulator for Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch. “Finding the mushrooms is going quite well,” he joked, while conceding that navigating the blue shells presented a greater challenge. Despite this, Verstappen remains committed to Formula One and has announced plans to compete in the Nurburgring 24-hour race this year.
The Red Bull driver revealed his current state of mind: “I wish I had more fun driving these cars,” he lamented. However, he also highlighted aspects of racing that do provide enjoyment, such as working with team members and engineers. There is a sense of dissonance in his statement, balancing the less engaging experience of piloting against the positive experiences related to teamwork.
Verstappen maintained optimism regarding upcoming improvements in the regulations: “I’ve had discussions with F1 and the FIA,” he said. “We are working towards something that will make everything better.” His comments suggest there is a concerted effort underway within the sport’s governing bodies to address these issues, hinting at potential changes ahead for drivers like Verstappen.
