Violence in India’s Manipur Leaves Four Dead Amid Ethnic Clashes Over Jobs

Clashes erupted between Manipur’s predominantly Hindu Meitei community and mainly Christian Kuki tribes over economic benefits and job quotas. At least four people were killed, two by police fire, on Tuesday. Two children from the Meitei community died when a bomb exploded in their house in Bishnupur district.

Later that day, police opened fire to control a crowd that stormed a security forces camp, killing two more people. Over 260 have been killed and more than 60,000 displaced since May 2023. The Chief Minister stated the perpetrators were unidentified but believed to be individuals or groups interested in disrupting peace. Authorities imposed a curfew and suspended internet services for five days.
