Visual Effects Artist Erases Studio Crew from Hollywood Scenes

In the epic fantasy film “Gladiator II,” a pivotal scene was marred by an unflattering oversight — a camera crew hidden behind Paul Mescal as he prepared for his character’s momentous showdown. Jack Zimmerman, a visual effects artist from Exceptional Minds, a nonprofit vocational academy and visual effects studio dedicated to autism, meticulously removed the intrusive footage. Located in Los Angeles, this groundbreaking film marked Zimmerman’s first collaboration with Hollywood.

For Zimmerman, who works at Exceptional Minds, being part of “Gladiator II” feels like a dream come true. With high school graduates on his team now launching careers in Hollywood, he is thrilled to contribute to such a significant work. Autism, described as a neurological condition affecting social interactions and how the brain processes information, can present challenges but also unique talents.

Exceptional Minds, founded by entertainment-industry parents who were concerned about their children’s future after high school, offers a full-time post-secondary program for autistic artists. The non-profit provides training to help graduates integrate into the competitive world of Hollywood. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, autism rates among US autistic adults are estimated around 40% unemployed.

Exceptional Minds is unique as it’s the only full-time vocational program of its kind in the United States for artists on the autism spectrum. The academy offers courses in visual effects and animation, with students supervised by experienced professionals who work for clients like Walt Disney, Netflix, and Sony. Alumni have contributed to 19 Oscar-winning or nominated films, including Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as well as hundreds of TV shows such as Game of Thrones.

Exceptional Minds CEO Lauren DeVillier explains that her organization aims to provide graduates with the skills necessary for meaningful work in their fields. Co-founder Yudi Bennett emphasizes the importance of creating a workplace environment where autistic artists can thrive and be part of integrated teams, not just on the periphery.

Lily Yllescas, an alumni who worked on visual effects for “Bridgerton,” shared her insights: “There’s so many little things you have to pay attention to when you’re working. It looks seamless in the final product, but it took us a lot of detail work.” Exceptional Minds graduates are not only skilled technicians; they also learn social skills that can be challenging for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Exceptional Minds has been training about 250 autistic adults annually since its founding and plans to launch a video game arts curriculum this fall. Class sizes remain small, with instructors provided with tools to support students’ unique needs. Students like Deirdre Mills, who worked on drawing skills while her peers focused on visual effects, emphasize the precision of their work.

Alumni such as Yllescas have secured positions at companies including Marvel, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon. Bennett, an assistant director for films such as “Broadcast News” and “Kramer vs. Kramer,” is proud that her organization has transformed young lives into successful professionals, citing examples like graduates moving out of their parents’ homes and obtaining driver’s licenses.

Jeff Willis from Marvel Studios praised Exceptional Minds artists for their creativity in handling complex tasks, noting how they were able to achieve a small detail such as expanding the number 828 on “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” film. The co-founder concluded by expressing pride in her organization’s success in helping young adults with autism find meaningful careers.
