Global internet monitoring group NetBlocks has confirmed that WhatsApp services in Pakistan are facing disruptions amid growing political tensions. The restrictions coincide with protests planned by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, demanding the release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“Live metrics show WhatsApp backends have been restricted in #Pakistan corroborating reports of media sharing issues,” NetBlocks stated, attributing the move to enhanced security measures ahead of the demonstrations.

A NetBlocks graphic revealed that WhatsApp’s accessibility dropped to 0% across most internet service providers, although 50% of servers connected to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) still allowed limited access.

The disruptions come as PTI mobilizes supporters for a rally in Islamabad. Authorities, citing security concerns, have also announced potential Wi-Fi restrictions, which will be implemented in high-risk areas, according to an interior ministry spokesperson.
