Women’s Figure Skating Enters Milan-Cortina with Dazzling Talent and High Stakes

The Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina have already begun to ignite anticipation as one of its most anticipated events unfolds: the women’s singles figure skating competition, kicking off on Tuesday. With 30 talented skaters vying for a spot among the top 24 contenders, this event promises to be an electrifying showcase of speed, precision, and artistic flair.

Among these promising talents is Kaori Sakamoto, Japan’s dominant force in women’s figure skating since the International Skating Union (ISU) imposed its ban on athletes in 2022. At just 25 years old, Sakamoto has been unstoppable, clinching three consecutive world titles from 2022 to 2024—her first and only win at the World Championships for Japan since 1968.

Among her competitors is Alysa Liu, an American who stunned the skating community by defeating Sakamoto at her maiden World Championship. At just 20 years old, Liu has notched a remarkable comeback, capturing the world title in her inaugural season back on the ice. Liu’s meteoric rise from adversity—she had to come back after springing back into competitive form after an extended break—has made her a compelling figure.

Japan’s presence is bolstered by three potential gold contenders: Mone Chiba, who secured 2025’s bronze medal with her remarkable consistency and skill. At 17 years old, she has already won the Four Continents Championship title alongside Japan’s other top skaters and former four-time world champion Ami Nakai.

Amber Glenn from Texas rounds out this contingent with a record-breaking season of success, culminating in her stunning performance at the World Championships last week. With an impressive performance including a quad during the Olympic trials, she now seeks to become the first American woman to secure a gold medal since 2022.

Petrosian, representing Russia, enters Milan-Cortina with only hope of securing women’s gold after their nation’s skaters have won four consecutive titles in this event. At just 18 years old and having already earned three world championships, she stands on the brink of her greatest achievement yet.

Ami Naito, a rising star at 17 years old, has impressed both fans and fellow competitors with her strong performances. Having finished second to Sakamoto at Japan’s most recent Championships, this young talent may be poised for a historic breakthrough in Milan-Cortina.

Isabeau Levito from the United States brings a familiar face back home to Milan after excelling on the senior circuit since 2021. With her exceptional performance during the US Championship and numerous accolades, she returns with a strong chance to add to her growing legacy at home. Her mother’s native city provides an added emotional weight for this seasoned athlete.

Haein Lee, another outside contender but still within reach of podium positions, brings a fresh element of unpredictability to the competition. Having achieved a triple axel during her training sessions in Milan, she carries aspirations akin to South Korean legend Yunna Kim, who won the 2010 Olympics. Her potential for surprise adds an exciting layer to this already dynamic field.
