President Asif Ali Zardari met with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui in Karachi on Sunday. The meeting, held amid heightened tensions between their parties, discussed the importance of national unity, political harmony, and continued democracy.
According to a statement released by the Presidency, the trio stressed the need for stronger efforts towards peace and the rule of law during their discussions. “The president emphasized the significance of maintaining unity and fostering collaborative initiatives,” noted the official statement posted on social media.
Their conversation touched upon Pakistan’s overall internal security situation and matters related to law and order. They also reviewed the evolving regional landscape and its potential impacts on the country. The leaders stressed the need for bolstering internal security and ensuring public safety.
The meeting between Zardari, who leads the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Siddiqui underscores escalating tensions between their parties since the Gul Plaza incident last year. During this period, PPP and MQM-P have served as allies in the federal government but have had disagreements over Karachi’s governance.
Recent incidents included Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, both from the PPP, facing pressure to resign. This heightened tension when Farooq Sattar, an MQM-P leader, urged PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to seek their resignations. The Centre’s rift with MQM-P also came to light when Kamran Tessori, who was appointed as the Sindh Governor by PML-N, was dismissed in favor of a PML-N nominee.
As part of their coalition government agreement, PML-N had agreed to appoint PPP leaders for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governors. In return, PPP pledged to let PML-N appoint its nominees for Sindh and Balochistan. Tessori’s removal further strengthened the ties between the PPP and PML-N.
Despite these developments, MQM-P has expressed dissatisfaction over not being consulted in decisions affecting it. The group vowed to soon take a clear stance on such matters, indicating potential future cooperation or conflict with the central government.
This meeting highlights how political harmony remains an elusive goal amidst ongoing internal strife within Pakistan’s federal coalition.
