Austrian authorities arrested a 39-year-old man on Saturday suspected of tampering baby food jars with rat poison, presumed an extortion scheme.

The suspect, apprehended in Burgenland, south of Vienna, was charged with causing public danger and attempted grievous bodily harm.

This arrest follows two weeks ago when Austrian officials discovered the poison-laced jars sold in some supermarkets; these were manufactured by German-based HiPP company.

German police also became involved after five tampered jars were found before consumption in Austria, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Authorities believe this crime aimed to extort the company, which subsequently issued a product recall in Austria.
