Mark Carney’s Liberals secure majority government following victories in two of three federal byelections held on Monday night. CBC News reports that wins in Toronto ridings of University-Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest pushed the party past the threshold needed for a majority in the House of Commons.

Liberal candidate Danielle Martin won University-Rosedale with a commanding share of the vote, vowing to work quickly on housing, affordability, healthcare, climate change, infrastructure, and public services. She expressed humility representing the riding and commitment to building on Chrystia Freeland’s legacy.

Dolly Begum also secured victory in Scarborough Southwest, solidifying the Liberal majority. The Quebec riding of Terrebonne remains undecided as votes are still being counted, with the Liberals holding a narrow lead over the Bloc Québécois.

The election results strengthen Carney’s position in Ottawa and provide his government with a stronger mandate to advance its legislative agenda.
