The European Union is nearing completion of plans to impose a hefty fine on Alphabet’s Google in an antitrust case under the Digital Markets Act. The fine, expected to be announced before the summer break, will likely be in triple digits of million euros – the highest ever imposed by the EU for a breach of the DMA.
The investigation, launched in March 2025, centers around concerns that Google favors its own services in search results and seeks compliance with local regulations. Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier emphasized that while future solutions are being negotiated, they will not hesitate to move forward as soon as possible.
Earlier this month, the European Commission gave Google additional time to address concerns after a previous proposal from the company was deemed insufficient.
