German Defence Ministry Clarifies US Plans for Tomahawk Deployment

On Monday, the German defence ministry stated that there has been no definitive cancellation by the United States of a plan devised under former President Joe Biden to deploy a battalion with long-range Tomahawk missiles in Germany.

This statement follows Washington’s announcement last week that it would reduce its military presence in Germany by 5,000 soldiers. The reduction was widely interpreted as including the cancellation of the planned deployment of weapons systems.

The defence ministry spokesperson emphasized that they are not referring to a definitive cancellation and stated that the weapons were meant to be stationed in Germany and may still proceed.

In any case, there are already plans underway by European nations to procure weapons systems that would fill the gap. The Pentagon’s announcement on Friday came amid growing tensions over the Iran war and tariff disputes, which have further strained relations between the US and Europe.

The long-range missiles were intended to serve as a significant additional deterrent against Russia while Europeans develop their own long-range missile capabilities.
