Federal Minister for Power, Awais Leghari, announced that the government is exploring the possibility of implementing a prepaid meter system for electricity, similar to the prepaid system used for mobile phones.

Speaking at a press conference in Multan, Leghari stressed the government’s commitment to tackling electricity theft, which has been a persistent problem. He declared that electricity theft is intolerable and outlined measures being taken to combat it. He also noted ongoing efforts to make electricity consumption more convenient for the public.

Leghari assured that ordinary citizens will benefit from relief measures. He disclosed that discussions with power distribution companies are in progress to ensure the distribution of a Rs. 45 billion relief package to all consumers.

He also addressed concerns about rising costs, stating that the capacity payment has doubled due to the depreciation of the Pakistani Rupee. However, he confidently assured that electricity prices would see a significant decrease within the next year.P

What is Prepaid Electricity Meter

Prepaid electricity meters allow consumers to pay for electricity in advance, much like topping up a mobile phone.

These meters enable users to purchase a certain amount of electricity, which is then credited to their meter. As electricity is consumed, the meter deducts from the preloaded balance.

This system helps users manage their electricity usage more effectively and can significantly reduce instances of electricity theft by ensuring that power is only used when it has been paid for in advance.
