Gulf countries and Jordan have called on the United Nations’ telecommunications agency to condemn Iran’s attacks on their infrastructure. The letter, dated April 15, was sent to all 48 member countries of the ITU Council.
It demands action over the impact on telecoms infrastructure since February 28, when US and Israeli strikes on Iran began. Tehran has retaliated with missile and unmanned aerial vehicle attacks across the Gulf.
The draft resolution stresses that these attacks are incompatible with member states’ obligations under the ITU constitution and convention. It also highlights damage to submarine cable landing infrastructure and suspension of projects due to such targeting.
ITU chief Doreen Bogdan-Martin is instructed to ensure agency department heads monitor Iranian attacks against telecommunication services and infrastructure across the region, including global implications. The draft resolution will be added to the agenda for discussion at the upcoming council meeting from April 28 to May 8.
