HiPP Recalls Austrian Baby Food Over Rat Poison Contamination

Dutch baby food brand HiPP has recalled jars of its 190-gram (6.7-ounce) carrot and potato-based product after a sample tested positive for rat poison in Austria on Saturday. The jar was reported by a customer who noticed the damaged lid had been opened previously and smelled spoiled.

The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety stated that HiPP is recalling all its baby food jars sold at SPAR supermarkets across Austria as a precaution, offering full refunds to customers without receipts. HiPP cannot rule out external contamination as the source of the poison.

Germany, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic are also investigating the incident. Ingestion of rat poison can inhibit blood clotting, potentially causing symptoms like bleeding gums, nose bleeds, and bruising, which may not appear for two to five days after consumption.
