Israel Allows Settlers to Buy Land in West Bank Despite Protests

In recent developments, Israeli authorities have approved measures easing the process for settlers to acquire West Bank land and increasing their oversight over Palestinians in areas under administration. This move has sparked alarm among Palestinian leaders, who see it as a dangerous step towards de facto annexation.

The decision comes after significant lobbying by high-ranking officials such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Defence Minister Israel Katz. Their recommendations were disseminated through Israeli news outlets Ynet and Haaretz. According to these sources, the proposed actions include eliminating longstanding restrictions that previously barred Jewish individuals from purchasing land in the disputed region of the West Bank.

The reforms also allow for expanded control by Israeli authorities over religious sites within the West Bank and extend their authority into areas governed by the Palestinian Authority (PA). These measures encompass tighter scrutiny over environmental issues, water use violations, and damage to archaeological sites—steps that some see as undermining autonomy in Palestinian-controlled regions.

In response to these new policies, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a strongly worded condemnation. He labeled the steps “dangerous,” “illegal,” and tantamount to annexation of West Bank territory.

Abbas’ comments come at a particularly sensitive time. Only three days prior to Netanyahu’s planned meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington, these moves have been met with international scrutiny. Abbas has urged both Trump and the UN Security Council to intervene against what he perceives as Israel’s dangerous expansion policies.

In stark contrast to these developments, Israeli officials have not provided immediate responses to Abbas’ criticism. However, Netanyahu’s administration is already under pressure due to upcoming elections later this year. The Prime Minister’s coalition includes significant support from pro-settler parties who advocate for annexing the disputed region of West Bank territory. This view holds that maintaining ties with historically and biblically significant lands is crucial for Israel’s security.

While international bodies such as the UN have previously voiced concern about the legality of Israeli occupation, including settlement-building in Palestinian territories, these measures remain contentious. They highlight deep divisions within the region regarding the future of Palestine and Israel’s stance on West Bank administration.
