Karachi Endures Severe Heat Amid Widespread Power Outages

The city's electricity demand exceeds 3,600 megawatts (MW), while the primary supplier, K-Electric, is only able to provide 2,900 MW

Residents of Karachi are struggling with intense heat coupled with increased load shedding and complete power outages.

The city’s electricity demand exceeds 3,600 megawatts (MW), while the primary supplier, K-Electric, is only able to provide 2,900 MW, resulting in a 700 MW shortfall.

Widespread power outages have hit densely populated areas, including New Karachi Town, North Karachi Township, North Nazimabad Town, and Surjani Town. Late-night blackouts have also plagued the neighborhoods of Liaquatabad, Azizabad, and Hussainabad. Other areas such as Baldia Town, Orangi Town, and Lyari have been without power for several hours.

A K-Electric spokesperson mentioned that 70 percent of Karachi is receiving electricity as usual, while the remaining 30 percent are experiencing load management due to issues like recovery and line losses. However, the company has declined to share specific data on electricity supply and demand, citing policy reasons.
