ISLAMABAD has introduced compulsory M-tag registration for all motorcycles starting February 20, signaling the launch of a second phase in the city’s vehicle tagging program. Deputy Commissioner Islamabad confirmed this directive via social media, emphasizing that no motorcycle category will be exempt from the new rule.
The regulation applies to every type of motorcycle found on the streets of the capital, including standard bikes and heavy motorcycles, as well as ride-hailing vehicles. Authorities clarified that all owners must present their vehicle registration documents and national identity card (CNIC) to obtain an M-tag sticker. Applications cannot be processed without both pieces of documentation.
The new system will feature 13 designated centers across Islamabad where motorcyclists can apply for the tag, starting at 10:00 AM on February 20. Staff at these locations will assist applicants and manage queues to ensure a smooth registration process. Motorcyclists are urged to carry all necessary documents to avoid delays.
The M-tag initiative follows the introduction of compulsory tags for cars, aimed at enhancing traffic management and improving compliance with vehicle registration rules during the first phase. Authorities previously activated M-tag readers at 12 key entry points to prevent unregistered vehicles from entering Islamabad.
Director General of Excise Bilal Azam highlighted that timely registration will streamline traffic flow, reduce delays at toll plazas, and eliminate fines or inconveniences for motorcycle owners. Sixteen service centers have been established across Islamabad, including 24-hour counters at both the 26 Number Chungi and 17 Meel toll plazas, as well as additional centers in Kachnar Park, Sector I-8, and F-9 Park.
The M-tag system aims to modernize vehicle tracking, facilitate more efficient toll collection, and provide a simpler registration process for commuters. Officials emphasized that applicants need only their registration card and CNIC to obtain the tag on-the-spot if documents are valid.
