Multan Faces Traffic Congestion Due to Illegal Roadside Boarding Points

Multan’s bustling transport sector is facing a significant challenge with persistent congestion around its main bus stand, prompting calls for drastic measures to address this issue.

The heart of Multan’s public transportation network is at the central bus stand, where buses and vans typically operate. However, many drivers bypass official operations by stopping on roadside stands immediately after leaving the terminal, creating unnecessary traffic disruptions. This practice has led to a situation where passengers often wait along the roadside rather than entering the designated bus terminal.

According to local transporters, this phenomenon is not new but continues to be problematic for commuters who face inconvenience daily. Many vehicles choose to stop on the side of roads instead of using the central facility, contributing further to the congestion around the bus stand.

Transporter representatives highlighted how illegal roadside stands have rendered many official bus terminals unusually quiet. They argued that lax enforcement and a lack of organized environment at the central bus stand have contributed significantly to the reliance on unofficial pick-up points by both drivers and passengers.

A recent delegation from transporters met with officials from the traffic police, seeking their support in mitigating the growing congestion caused by illegal roadside stands and the parking of large passenger vehicles on main roads. At this meeting, the transporters emphasized a need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to combat these issues effectively.

They called upon authorities to close down illegal roadside stands and impose substantial fines on buses and other larger vehicles that continue to stop on main roads without operating from the official bus terminal. Transporters believe such punitive measures would not only restore the importance of central bus stand but also improve overall traffic flow in the surrounding areas.
