Government Contacts Jamaat e Islami for Fresh Petroleum Levy Talks

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal has contacted Jamaat e Islami Vice Emir Liaquat Baloch to initiate fresh political negotiations.

The outreach centres on the petroleum levy, an issue that has drawn criticism from opposition parties and consumer groups over its impact on fuel prices.

The government has faced sustained pressure over energy costs, with several parties demanding relief measures for households. The contact with Jamaat e Islami suggests an attempt to broaden political consensus around the levy and related economic decisions.

Both government and opposition figures have expressed willingness to engage, though the scope and timing of formal talks remain to be confirmed.

The move comes as the administration looks to manage the political fallout from rising living costs while maintaining revenue targets agreed with international lenders.
