The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has announced nationwide protests on January 28 at 3:00 PM, opposing the newly approved amendments to the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025.
The Senate recently passed controversial amendments to PECA, which critics claim undermine media independence, stifle social media platforms, and restrict freedom of speech. The amendments will come into force once signed by the president.
Despite appeals from the PFUJ for consultations with stakeholders before the Senate’s decision, the government proceeded without engagement, drawing sharp criticism from the journalist community.
Terming the amendments unconstitutional, the PFUJ has urged all Union of Journalists (UJs) to stage demonstrations at local press clubs. In its statement, the union stressed the need for unity to deliver a strong message rejecting the legislation.
