PTA Warns of Mobile, Internet Disruptions Over Telecom License Dispute

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning that Pakistan may face significant mobile, internet, and ATM service disruptions due to the non-renewal of Long-Distance International (LDI) operators’ licenses.

According to a PTA document, 50% of mobile traffic and 10% of internet traffic could be affected, with the potential shutdown of numerous mobile towers and 40% of ATMs going offline.

The disruption stems from a dispute between telecom companies and the Ministry of IT over outstanding dues, according to a private news channel. With licenses for several LDI operators already expired, the PTA has linked license renewals to the settlement of these payments. Some companies have resorted to legal action to keep their services operational.

Additionally, Pakistan’s ongoing internet issues are compounded by the recent alleged implementation of internet firewalls, which, while intended to monitor and filter online traffic, are also affecting the overall connectivity.
