The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has decided to declare Monday, August 8, as a Bank Holiday for Zakat deduction purposes. A statement issued today by the central bank emphasizes that all banks, development finance institutions (DFIs), and microfinance banks (MFBs) will be closed off-limits to public dealings on this date.

However, employees of these financial entities are advised to continue their routine work as usual. August 8th will be considered a normal working day for staff members; they can attend the office but will not engage in any transactions with customers.

This Bank Holiday aligns with established traditions where eligible accounts receive Zakat deductions on the first day of Ramadan. It underscores the SBP’s commitment to observing religious practices while ensuring that banking operations do not suffer significant disruptions due to holiday closures.

The decision comes at a crucial time, as August 8 marks a significant Islamic month for millions across Pakistan and globally, coinciding with the end of fasting during Ramadan. By maintaining minimal public dealings on this day, financial institutions aim to strike a delicate balance between religious observance and operational necessity.
