The Sindh government has announced a sweeping ban on all forms of plastic shopping bags across the province, set to take effect from June 15.

A formal notification from the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development outlines the ban, which applies to non-degradable, oxo-degradable, black, and recycled plastic bags. This marks the province’s first full-scale prohibition since a limited ban was introduced in 2019.

The move comes under revised rules outlined in the Sindh Prohibition of Non-Degradable Plastic Products Rules, 2014.

Agha Shah Nawaz, Secretary of the Climate Change and Coastal Development Department, confirmed that only eco-friendly alternatives will be permitted. “Plastic bags are a major cause of environmental destruction,” he said, stressing that the new policy will be strictly enforced with no exceptions.

He added that action will be taken against anyone who fails to comply.
