Sindh government has decided to enforce a ban on dumpers entering the city during daytime hours. Under this new regulation, dumpers will only be allowed to enter Karachi between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The decision was made under the leadership of Chief Secretary Sindh, Asif Haider Shah, following an emergency meeting on traffic accidents. The meeting was attended by key officials including the Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police, Karachi Commissioner, Additional IG Karachi, Secretary Transport, DIG Traffic, and other relevant authorities.
It was agreed that all large vehicles and their drivers operating within Karachi will undergo physical verification to ensure adherence to road safety regulations. Additionally, all vehicles in the city will be required to obtain a QR code certificate from the Department of Transport.
The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board has been directed to shift its operations to nighttime within the next three months to help reduce daytime traffic congestion. Furthermore, the Chief Secretary instructed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to conduct a complete inspection of all water tankers within one month to ensure compliance with security and traffic regulations.
Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of traffic laws, stating that careless driving would not only result in fines but also First Information Reports (FIRs) being filed. He underlined that the primary cause of accidents was the lack of adherence to heavy traffic vehicle regulations. To address this, the government plans to introduce a Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) throughout the province, which is expected to be implemented as soon as possible.
The traffic police also reported that motorcycles make up 65% of vehicles on the road, and 55% of accidents involve motorcyclists. In light of this, the Chief Secretary directed the DIG Traffic to implement measures within a month to improve traffic conditions and enforce traffic laws more rigorously. The fines for traffic violations are also set to be increased fourfold to discourage violations and enhance road safety.
The meeting also announced stricter measures for motorcyclists, including enforcing helmet usage. Furthermore, the Chief Secretary instructed that the Traffic Engineering Bureau be reactivated and developed into a more effective agency to provide long-term solutions to Karachi’s traffic issues and enhance the traffic system.
Sindh government remains committed to improving road safety, preventing accidents, and ensuring better traffic management in Karachi. These measures will be implemented with utmost diligence, with the Department of Information tasked to run media campaigns to raise awareness of traffic laws and safety.
