South African authorities pledged to combat xenophobic incidents following Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s protest over social media videos depicting violence against foreign nationals.
Ablakwa summoned South Africa’s envoy, expressing concern over a KwaZulu-Natal incident where a Ghanaian national was confronted and told to leave his country. The minister called for intervention to prevent further escalation of xenophobic acts.
South Africa’s police ministry vowed to identify and apprehend those involved in or inciting such acts, emphasizing that violence against migrant communities is incompatible with constitutional democracy. Minister Ronald Lamola stressed the threat these actions pose to South Africa’s constitutional order, urging community leaders and civil society groups to promote dialogue and prevent further attacks.
