Taliban’s Global Isolation Grows Over Militant Ties
The Afghan Taliban regime is facing increased global isolation due to allegations of backing militant groups and maintaining links with criminal networks. A new report from the Middle East Institute reveals that around 55 members and officials still have ties with Al-Qaeda, while over 20 percent of Taliban leaders were involved in bombings and suicide attacks.
UN Sanctions List Includes 135 Individuals
According to Afghanistan International media outlet, out of the Taliban’s 33-member cabinet, 13 to 14 are on the UN sanctions list. This includes interim Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund and deputy prime minister. Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and several other ministers also face travel and arms purchase restrictions.
Experts Link Militant Activities to Isolation
The international community’s confidence in the Taliban regime has eroded due to accusations of involvement in terrorism, drug smuggling, and illicit activities. Experts believe that these links with global militants indicate ongoing militant activities, leading to further isolation for the Afghan Taliban.
