The leaders of Britain, Canada and France issued a rare joint warning on Monday, threatening “concrete actions” against Israel if it does not halt its intensified military campaign in Gaza and allow unfettered humanitarian access.
The statement, published by the UK government, criticised the Israeli government’s continued blockade of essential aid and warned that such actions “risk breaching international humanitarian law.” The three leaders also signalled opposition to any expansion of settlements in the West Bank and said they were prepared to implement “targeted sanctions.”
Their intervention follows the launch of a new Israeli military operation in Gaza and remarks from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who vowed to assert control over the entire territory. Aid agencies have repeatedly raised alarms over the threat of famine in the enclave.
Netanyahu responded sharply, accusing the Western leaders of rewarding Hamas for the October 7 attacks. “Israel will continue to defend itself by just means until total victory is achieved,” he said, reaffirming conditions including hostage releases and the demilitarisation of Gaza.
While reiterating support for Israel’s right to self-defence, the UK, Canada and France described the escalation as “wholly disproportionate” and said they “will not stand by” as what they called “egregious actions” continue.
