US Urges Iran to Free Nobel Peace Prize Winner
On Thursday, the US urged Iran to release Narges Mohammadi, a jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner. Her supporters warned that she is at risk of dying in custody.
Mohammadi, 54, has been behind bars for most of the past two decades and reportedly had two heart attacks in recent weeks, according to her supporters.
US Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, Riley Barnes, wrote on social media, “We call on the Iranian regime to release her now and give her the care she needs. The world is watching.”
The US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Mohammadi has criticized these actions, stating that they hurt ordinary people and only strengthened the clerical state.
She was arrested again in December after criticizing the Islamic Republic at a funeral for a lawyer.
