US Seizes Iranian Cargo Ship Amid Tensions

On Monday, tensions escalated between the US and Iran as the US seized an Iranian cargo ship attempting to breach its blockade. The incident occurred just days before the ceasefire is set to expire on Tuesday.

Iran Vows No Participation in Peace Talks

In response to the seizure, Iran’s military spokesperson warned of retaliation against what was termed “armed piracy” by the US military. Iran has also rejected participation in a second round of peace talks, citing ongoing blockades and perceived excessive demands from Washington.

Impact on Global Oil Markets

Oil prices surged as stock markets fluctuated amid concerns over potential disruptions to marine traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about one-fifth of global oil supply. The US has maintained its blockade of Iranian ports while Iran has intermittently imposed its own restrictions on maritime traffic in the region.

Negotiations and Peace Talks at Risk

Despite efforts by US President Trump to arrange peace talks with Iran’s First Vice President Mohammadreza Aref, Iran has dismissed these proposals due to ongoing tensions. The choice for Iran is clear: either a free oil market or facing significant costs if the blockade persists.

US Delegation Prepares for Islamabad Talks

Trump announced that his envoys would arrive in Islamabad on Monday evening, just one day before the ceasefire ends. The US delegation, led by Vice President Mike Pence and including Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, is set to meet with Iran’s representatives despite the lack of a confirmed agreement.

Pakistan Hosts Talks Amid Security Measures

In anticipation of the talks, Islamabad has implemented security measures, halting public transport and heavy goods traffic. The Serena Hotel, where previous negotiations took place, has also been secured with barbed wire as guests are advised to leave.

Global Energy Shock Intensifies

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant drop in global oil production, exacerbating the already strained energy markets. Thousands of casualties from US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon have further complicated diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.
