US Vice President JD Vance stated that talks between the US and Iran have made significant progress. He emphasized that neither side wants a military campaign resumption.

Vance told reporters at a White House briefing, “We think the Iranians want to make a deal.”

The core issue for the US is preventing Iran from ever possessing a nuclear weapon, according to Vance. If Iran were allowed this capability, other countries might seek similar weapons, he warned.

The US seeks to limit the number of nations with nuclear arms and has proposed working with Iran on a process to prevent rebuilding their nuclear weapons capacity in future years, Vance added.

President Trump is under pressure to reach an accord that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He has previously expressed hope for a deal ending the conflict but also threatened military strikes if no accord is reached. Russia’s potential possession of enriched uranium from Iran was not part of the US government’s plan, Vance said.
