WhatsApp Shifts Session Servers Abroad Amid Connectivity Issues in Pakistan

Perrsistent slow internet speeds and frequent outages have forced several international companies, including WhatsApp, to relocate their session server routing abroad, causing connectivity disruptions for users. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has linked these issues to WhatsApp’s decision to move its Content Delivery Network (CDN) outside the country.

Documents from the PTA reveal that WhatsApp’s move was prompted by recent internet shutdowns in Pakistan, which led to the relocation of its session server routing. This has impacted service delivery, causing communication challenges for users.

Despite these setbacks, the PTA has reported improvements in Pakistan’s internet services. Fixed-line internet speeds have seen a two-level increase over the past month, though Pakistan still ranks 139th globally in this category. Mobile networks have also improved by three levels, positioning Pakistan at 97th place in the mobile network rankings.
