China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday in Pyongyang, aiming to boost communication and cooperation between the two nations.
During their meeting, Wang emphasized the need for China and North Korea to strengthen coordination on major international and regional affairs, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry. This comes after the COVID-19 pandemic froze exchanges and as Kim solidified ties with Russia.
North Korean state media KCNA reported that Kim also stressed the importance of intensifying exchanges and contacts at various levels, highlighting the necessity for stronger ties to safeguard shared interests.
Wang pledged during a meeting on Thursday with his North Korean counterpart to continue consolidating the positive momentum in bilateral relations. The Chinese diplomat expressed willingness to enhance interactions and promote practical cooperation with North Korea.
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to visit China next month, potentially paving the way for resuming talks with Kim Jong Un.
