Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared plans for a military operation in Rafah, a region situated in the western area of Gaza, adjacent to the border with Egypt.

Rafah serves as a crucial border crossing for Gaza residents seeking employment opportunities outside the territory.

The Israeli cabinet has granted approval for the attack on Rafah, although no additional war budget has been sanctioned yet. Nevertheless, the cabinet’s endorsement of the operation is seen as a significant move by Netanyahu.

During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s stance, asserting that the country will not permit the presence of 1.5 million Palestinians in Rafah.

Despite warnings from various adversaries and allies against military intervention in Rafah, Netanyahu dismissed criticism, labeling a speech by American Senator Chuck Schumer as “stupid.”
